Friday Mailday and a New Retail Product
A box arrived in my mailbox Friday from Charlie. In it contained 271 Chicago Cubs baseball cards. In return, I'll be shipping off Buffalo Sabres hockey cards and a few Matt Nokes cards.
On Friday morning I was scrolling through Facebook, and came across a familiar name in the "friends you may know section." Derrick May. He was a Cubs prospect sensation in the early 1990's, and one of the cards from 1991 Fleer I recall coveting. Yes, the same 1991 Fleer that is likely the ugliest design jn the history of baseball cards. My box from Charlie contained a six pack of May.
Ryne Sandberg and Andre Dawson were also big names of my childhood and this box included a couple cards I don't believe I have: 2012 Panini Cooperstown.
I recently read a fellow collector's blog that mentioned 1992 Topps Kids. Like that post, I also don't remember seeing this when it was new. I know I have the Mark Grace and George Bell, but this seems to be the first time I've laid eyes on the Shawon Dunston.
This 1998 Fleer Kevin Tapani is just cool. Tap is just chilling in the Cubs bullpen at Wrigley Field. It reminds me of summer days in high school in my friend's pool talking about a Cubs rotation of Tapani and Steve Trachsel.
From 2018 Stadium Club, I believe this is my first Willson Contreras.
And there was a Javier Baez! This brings my weekly count of Baez to 53 cards.
Earlier in the day I was shown a picture of a Panini autographed card of David Bote. It was a new product, so of course I had to make a stop at Target after work.
As I walked up to the card section, the Excell Marketing rep was stocking the shelves. Boy, was he ever. Eight of the large boxes of Topps Fire plus blasters and hanger packs. Even more Topps Chrome as well as Archives and Allen & Ginter. If only I had time to bust open retail! Panini Chronicles was there, so I grabbed three of the five blasters.
As much as I dislike Panini, they sure are fun breaks. How about a Kris Bryant numbered to /199.
I love this Bryant with Chicago in a pennant.
A shiny Bryant.
Yet another Bryant. This one reminds me of Bowman Platinum.
Here's an Anthony Rizzo Prizm.
And another Rizzo.
The blasters include a pack of three Revolution cards. Of the three blasters, I pulled two Rizzo's.
