Boys of Zimmer: 30th Anniversary Series - 2/9/1989

While recently blogging about a random Cubs pitcher, Pat Perry, I became immersed in articles from 1988 and 1989. This is the 30th anniversary of the 1989 Cubs "Boys of Zimmer," a team that reached the postseason after a five year hiatus. This daily series will look back at Chicago Tribune articles and columns from 30 years ago, day by day.

In the February 9, 1989 edition of the Chicago Tribune, columnist Bob Verdi was critical of both Chicago baseball teams. The criticism came with trades each club, the Cubs and White Sox, had made heading into the 1989 season. The Cubs dealt Rafael Palmeiro to the Texas Rangers, while the White Sox shipped Joel Davis to the Cleveland Indians.

The Cubs Caravan hit Indianapolis, and a surprise guest made an appearance...from the Chicago Bears. It was Mike McCaskey, the Bears President.

Mitch Williams began a different kind of work out in preparation for baseball season: bowling!

And it wouldn't truly be a summer of Zim without a column about manager Don Zimmer. Chuck Carlson with the Decatur Herald & Review in Decatur, Illinois did just that.
