Boys of Zimmer: 30th Anniversary Series - 2/11/1989

While recently blogging about a random Cubs pitcher, Pat Perry, I became immersed in articles from 1988 and 1989. This is the 30th anniversary of the 1989 Cubs "Boys of Zimmer," a team that reached the postseason after a five year hiatus. This daily series will look back at Chicago Tribune articles and columns from 30 years ago, day by day.

On this day 30 years ago the Cubs signed Curtis Wilkerson to a two-year deal.

Wilkerson received a nice pay increase for the 1989 season after earning $252,500 with the Texas Rangers in 1988. His 1989 salary would be $500,000, plus $400,000 for the 1990 season.

Another Cubs newcomer for 1989 would be Mitch Williams, dubbed "Wild Thing."

Does it get any more 1989 than Cubs minor league manager Pete Mackanin talking about his son talking in the universal kids language: Nintendo.
