Boys of Zimmer - 30th Anniversary Series - 2/18/1989

While recently blogging about a random Cubs pitcher, Pat Perry, I became immersed in articles from 1988 and 1989. This is the 30th anniversary of the 1989 Cubs "Boys of Zimmer," a team that reached the postseason after a five year hiatus. This daily series will look back at Chicago Tribune articles and columns from 30 years ago, day by day.

Don Zimmer was named the Chicago Cubs manager in 1988. One of the finalists for the job was Mike Roarke, who was the St. Louis Cardinals pitching coach.

Roarke was the Cubs pitching coach from 1978 to 1980. He never did get a MLB manager position.

In a previous entry Ty Griffin, the Cubs 1st round draft pick in 1988, had his jersey retired by his high school in Tampa, Florida. The Tampa Tribune ran a column on the former Olympian.

Leo Durocher, the Cubs manager from 1966 to 1972 was in serious condition following an auto accident.
