Ballpark Evolution, Paul Noce Golfing, and Vintage Wrestling
A pair of packages arrived on Thursday from Georgia and Kansas. Korey in Kansas sent over 200 Cubs, in which I'll be returning a box of Kansas City Chiefs.
Recently, there have been some baseball card design discussions on Twitter, and one such topic talked about the best and worst designs of the junk era. A few collectors mentioned 1989 Score as a terrible design.
I disagree! But, that's probably because it was a product that I opened a lot as a kid, and that's where each collector has their favorites. Whatever you remember fondly as a young collector.
Another Score came in Korey's mailer. It's the Score Rising Star of Hector Villanueva, who is always amongst my favorite obscure Cubs players.
Another hot young rookie in the early 1990's was Derrick May. These Classic cards were very colorful. This May is the blue border, and there were also other colored borders like red, purple, and green.
Daniel in Dahlonega (Georgia) and I have made several trades the past couple years. This time he was interested in a bunch of the non-sports cards that were in my Craigslist purchase. I boxed up around 150 cards for him and he sent me a return of some Cubs, including this 2019 Topps Ballpark Evolution I needed.
Really cool with the old photo and current photo of Wrigley Field. I do have a complaint about this card. It shows two different angles, and in my opinion the view from home plate looking to the outfield would have made a much better Then photo. The outfield has changed so much.
A new Fergie Jenkins for the collection from 2018 Sportkings.
Not a new addition, but this Fleer baseball card screams 1983. Allen Ripley went 5-7 for the 1982 Chicago Cubs, and he donned these awesome powder blue pinstriped uniform.
Back to the new additions. From 2018 Topps Gallery it's the wood-grain parallel of Willson Contreras.
The last new addition is from 2019 Topps, and it's the Stars of the Game insert of Kyle Schwarber.
Dan added a team set of 1988 ProCards Iowa Cubs that features Mark Grace.
And a golfing Paul Noce!
He also added some non-Cubs cards. I'm a sucker for professional wrestling, though I lean toward the older generation of the 1980's and 1990's. These WWF cards were put out by Topps in 1985. Oh, the names here: Andre the Giant, Jesse "The Body" Ventura, Fabulous Moolah, and Wendi Richter. Also, it's Wrestlemania day as I type this out!
