Pete Vonachen and the Peoria Chiefs Mailday

Repeat traders to the One Million Cubs Project, Greg in Oregon and TJ in Illinois, sent boxes filled with more than 1,500 Cubs cards on Friday.

I was at a wedding over the weekend, not far from TJ, actually, so I didn’t get to open these up until Monday.

In TJ’s note he said he included a partial set of the 1984 Cubs 7-Up cards. I remember an older kid in my school had this set when I was young and it felt like I would never be able to attain such cards. Isn’t it funny looking back at our childhood, pre-Internet, how many cards we thought we’d never have are now easily accesible.

These cards have awesome photography, and the Wrigley ivy in the background is perfect! A couple oddballs going back further are these Burger Chef discs of Rick Reuschel and Joe Wallis.

You need sunglasses to look closely at this Starlin Castro card.

Assuming these are stick-on tattoos? From 1984 Bill Buckner is on here.

I have this 1993 Topps Traded Turk Wendell card, but I never noticed the back of the card. Look at that dinosaur of a cell phone!

This could be a new Ryne Sandberg. It’s a 1992 Fleer Performer Collection with Citgo and 7-11 on the back.

Speaking of new Ryno cards, this might be the first 1989 O-Pee-Chee card in my collection. This was in Greg’s box.

Robert Machado was a catcher with some promise in the early 2000’s.

Wow, a trio of 2019 Topps 150 years stamps featuring Kyle Schwarber, and David Bote times two.

A number of 1988 Peoria Chiefs cards were also here including the Pete Vonachen and Harry Caray card. Vonachen owned the Chiefs and was best friends with Caray. Pete was one of the nicest men you could meet.

My family would rent a skybox over Memorial Day weekend for a few years for a Chiefs game. One person from each suite can throw out a first pitch and one year I did. It skipped in the dirt, and still had the dirt stain! After the game my mom chased down Pete and he signed the ball for me.
