First Package from Vermont and a Louisiana Memory

After a slow couple weeks at the mailbox, my return from the National was met with five packages of Cubs baseball cards waiting for me.

Gregory in Louisiana sent some Allen & Ginter Cubs from this year’s set. I’ve only been to Louisiana once, and it was when I was traveling with the Western Illinois men’s basketball team.

The Leathernecks played Southeastern Louisiana in Hammond. Being in new places, I liked to take in the local cuisine. So, upon arrival I walked over to the Walgreen’s that was next to our hotel and asked the cashier where a good seafood place is nearby.

She directed me and my friend, Kyle, to Don’s Seafood and said it was only about a mile down the road.

It was over two miles...and we walked. There was no sidewalk, and it was a very busy Main Street. Whoops. Hey, but the aligator was great!

So were the oysters.

It was a chore to get a taxi back to the hotel in time to change for game time. We made, had a great story to tell, and enjoyed some great seafood in Hammond, Louisiana. Hey, Greg....throw in some gator for me next time!

Rafael in New York sent another package of Cubs. This is our second trade. He sent some new 2019 Stadium Club that I needed.

Also were some Topps Series 2, a product I didn’t buy as I saved up for the National. I love this Windy City Warriors card because it features my two favorite Cubs: Javier Baez and Willson Contreras.

@Thereal_willb sent a nice selection stretching back into the 1970’s to today. A few Rick Reuschel cards. He’s a player that he and I share an alma mater (Western Illinois), yet I’ve never met him until the National. He has not appeared at the Cubs Convention in the past five years I’ve been going. It was great meeting Rick and we talked about WIU for a minute.

A 1979 Post Bobby Murcer. These are great looking oddball cards.

Hall of Famer rookie card. It’s the 1982 Topps Lee Smith, the latest Cub to be inducted in Cooperstown.

Future Hall of Famer rookie card? Kris Bryant still has a book to write to be talked about getting into Cooperstown, but he has a good start.

And an Anthony Rizzo Refractor from 2017 Topps Chrome.

My first Vermont Mailday!!!! Thanks, Beth. Vermont is actually a state I would love to visit. All of the New England states intrigue me. My wife and I have been talking about a trip to the northeast for some time, and we will make it happen eventually. Beth’s box was filled with hits including a snowflake parallel of Cole Hamels from 2018 Topps Holiday.

Love Javier Baez inserts, and a chrome version of the 1984 Topps design...yes!

The very first box break I was in, circa 2014, I hit an Arismendy Alcantara. At the time it was worth what I paid for the break (or more). Not so much anymore. This 2015 Panini Prizm is numbered 36/60.

Kris Bryant from 2018 Panini Revolution. Such a cool card.

A glossy Albert Almora from 2018 Allen & Ginter.

Surprisingly, this is my first Will Ferrell Topps Archives Cubs card. Since the set was released in 2016, I think I have owned every other Ferrell card, but this one. An awesome addition to the collection.

Here’s a big hit! Jake Arrieta relic from 2017 Topps. This is a thick one, too.

And hey, this might be my first autographed card of Mark Prior. It’s from 2016 Topps. I didn’t even know this existed. This is awesome!

The problem with being so behind and disorganized at the moment is I have misplaced the fifth box of Cubs from Monday’s Mailday (I am writing this nearly a week later). Robert in California sent another box and it included more than 600 Cubs cards.
