Delaware Becomes the 42nd State To Send Cubs Cards in 2019
Before I left for a long weekend in Door County, Wisconsin, I checked my mailbox at the post office. It was pretty full with Cubs baseball card surprises!
Cassa in Ohio sent a stack of nearly 100 Cubs cards. The pile ranged from some 80’s classics like Steve Trout, Thad Bosley, and Doug Dascenzo to new Cubs Kyle Schwarber, Addison Russell, and Jason Heyward.
One card really stood out. I miss Bowman Heritage, and the 2001 Bowman Heritage set is really nice. Love the black and white, and this image of the “Crime Dog” Fred McGriff is fantastic.
Janice in Illinois sent a small flat rate box. This was a referral from Michael Pierce. Thanks! Janice even enclosed a personal hand written note.
Inside were quite a few oddball Cubs that are new to my collection. Four of them are Mr. Cub, Ernie Banks. Here’s an Old Style Cubs Greats card.
Look at this one! King of Clubs? More like King of Cubs, am I right? This is from the 1993 Cardtoons set.
From 2001 Topps Archives, it’s a reprint of the 1963 Topps National League Home Run Leaders card. Look at that company: Banks, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Frank Robinson, and Orlando Cepeda.
Fleer Greats of the Game is a cool set. This card is from 2006.
One thing I’ve noticed with some of the older Upper Deck greats cards is a consistent error differentiating the Cubs and White Sox. Case in point: this 1994 Upper Deck Ron Santo has an identity crisis. At least on this example Santo was actually a member of both the Cubs and White Sox. The main picture here shows Santo in a White Sox jersey, and the team displayed on the front is the White Sox. The smaller picture shows Santo in a Cubs hat. Little inconsistencies on these cards just bother me.

To my recollection this is the first 1991 Upper Deck Heroes of Baseball Fergie Jenkins in my collection.
Joseph in Ohio sent a PWE with some sweet Cubs hits. I had never seen this Greg Maddux card before. From the front it looks like the design of the old Sportscaster cards from the late 1970’s.
Then I looked at the back. It’s from 2004 Donruss and look at that low serial number: 4/15.
The other cards are from the VIP gift bags from this year’s National Sports Collectors Convention. This was a five-card Topps set that featured a pair of White Sox (Frank Thomas and Carlton Fisk) along with these three Cubs: Kris Bryant, Ernie Banks, and Ryne Sandberg.
Finally, I can cross my 42nd state off the trade list in 2019. Thanks to William in Wilmington, the first state in the union, Delaware, becomes the 42nd different state to send Cubs cards to the One Million Cubs Project in 2019.
