One Million Cubs Project Fan Favorites
Topps Archives has Fan Favorites autographs each year in its release. I’m a fan of these because it’s not the same old retired players that appear year after year.
I would love to see some different former Cubs appear, but I digress. This Mailday post is going to feature the One Million Cubs Project Fan Favorites.
On occasion I like to feature random Cubs cards in this space. Today, it’s completely dedicated to that thanks to a box from Chris in Massachusetts. Well, not completely. I do need to highlight this Ryne Sandberg card, because I don’t have this card, and didn’t know these existed.
This is a 1986 Drake’s Big Hitters Ryne Sandberg. However, it appears hand cut from a collector. It appears that this card came on the side or bottom of a Drake’s snacks box.
On to the fan favorites of Chicago Cubs yesteryear. I’ll start with Rick Wrona. I recently tweeted out a Cubs lineup from 1989, and Wrona was the starting catcher. Someone asked who Wrona was, and I blindly thought Wrona played much more than he did. Wrona did play in Major League Baseball for six seasons, but only 73 games.
Scott Sanderson, on the other hand, had a long career in the big leagues. Much of that big league career was with the Chicago Cubs in the 1980’s and was a top pitcher on the 1984 Cubs team.
Marvell Wynne had a long career, but often overlooked as a Cubs player.
While Wynne and Wrona are not really known as fan favorites, this next guy sure is. Shawon Dunston was a huge fan favorite with the Cubs, and he has also been included in the Topps Archives Fan Favorites checklist.
I wanted to highlight Luis Salazar solely based on a response to a tweet where I listed a Cubs starting lineup from 1989.

Many former Cubs players were mingling following the Larry Pogofsky All Star Challenge a few weeks ago. Les Lancaster participated in thé game and stuck around for the post game barbecue. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to chat with Les, so as a consolation here are some Les Lancaster baseball cards.
