Fleer Cubs Team Sets Mailday
Matt in Ohio reached out recently after he found a couple old Fleer Cubs team sets. They were from 1991 and 1992 Fleer.
1991 Fleer is probably the definition of junk era baseball cards. Thé set was released at thé height of thé “junk era,” thé base set contains really no valuable rookies, and that awful, ugly yellow border.
It’s a terrible set, I do admit. But, Cubs are Cubs! Also, I do have somewhat of a soft spot for 1991 Fleer because this was thé absolute height of my baseball card collecting. Not sure when this product was released, but I do know it was before June 6, 1991, because I received the sealed Cubs team set for my birthday. I also got one of those mini baseball card albums to put my new Cubs baseball cards inside.
The images are mainly ho-hum, however a few of the pitching shots are taken during a game at Wrigley Field and thé green ivy in the background pops with the yellow border.
One year later Fleer drastically changed the look of the design. From those bright yellow borders to a softer green. A team logo in the upper right corner with a combination of both horizontal and vertical aligning front and last names.
Not sure why, but I never came around to this set, and I think it’s because my love for baseball was beginning to dissipate in 1992. My childhood card collecting began in 1988, and I equally collected baseball and football cards. Then 1992 happened with Shaquille O’Neal. Instantly, I became a Shaq and Orlando Magic fan, and turned all my attention to basketball cards by the summer of 1992.
I was excited to collect George Bell Cubs cards back in 1992, though.
Matt added another stack of Cubs cards including this David Bote from 2019 Topps Big League. The sleeper product of the year in my opinion.
And a couple cards of my second favorite Cubs player, Willson Contreras.
