Cubs Oddballs And Closing In on a Milestone
Three packages with nearly 1,200 Cubs baseball cards were delivered on Saturday. The Mailday put me to almost 349,000 Cubs cards as I close in on a milestone and reach 35% of my goal of one million Cubs cards.
Glen sent another NAFTA trade package. I’ve lost count at how many trades we’ve conducted, as it’s basically an ongoing trade back and forth. One card he sent is a 2018 Elite Extra Edition D.J. Wilson 669/999. This has become one of my favorite products, although I only buy into breaks as opposed to hobby boxes. I did buy about a half dozen retail blasters last year. Looking forward to what the 2019 checklist looks like for Cubs, as it was pretty strong in 2018.
Jorge Soler was named a finalist for the American League Comeback Player of the Year. Back in 2012 when this Bowman Chrome 1st Bowman card came out he was expected to bash 40+ home runs in MLB. It took awhile, and after a couple injury-plagued seasons Soler really broke out in 2019 while appearing in all 162 games. He had only played in 182 big league games in the three years prior. I’m rooting for Soler to win the award.
Rick Reuschel is a favorite of mine, and this is a classic look on the 1977 Topps card. The picture was taken during Spring Training.

You've heard the name "Oddball Eddie" in past posts. That's right, another box from Baltimore arrived. I've given Ed in Baltimore the nickname "Oddball Eddie" because he sends some great Chicago Cubs vintage baseball cards and oddball cards. This time around, he sent a reprint of the Guy Bush Jack of Spades mini.
Matte finish on cards is a favorite of mine, especially in today's world of glossy finishes. Here's a nice 1994 Studio Heritage Collection Ryne Sandberg.
Neither vintage nor oddball, but I love this 2017 Topps Inception Javier Baez card.

Ballstreet was an oddball that was released in the early 1990's. This Andre Dawson Ballstreet card from 1991 doesn't look familiar. A nice addition to the Dawson collection.
Another oddball Andre Dawson from 1992 Topps Magazine. Too bad Topps Magazine wasn't still around. I understand print is in the past with the Internet, but I'm old school and love holding a magazine. I have a subscription to Sports Collectors Digest.

The last package came from Paul in New York, and it's the second box he has sent in the past month. It included almost 1,200 Cubs baseball cards.
Among them some 1990 Topps mini cards including Mike Bielecki, Ryne Sandberg, and Greg Maddux. These cards weren't too common from what I remember. Certainly not as common as the standard 1990 Topps cards. I do remember picking up some packs of them as an 8-year old, though.
So close to 350,000 Cubs baseball cards. Reaching 35% of my goal is so close, and there are some big trades in the works. While I am currently pacing under 400,000 cards for the year, I should get very close to it based on some pending deals.
