Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer Discuss Minor League Pay and Managerial Hiring Process
The Cubs Convention has many panels throughout the three-day weekend. As I am an autograph collector, I typically skip the panels and jump from autograph to autograph line throughout both Saturday and Sunday.
On Saturday morning, the Cubs Convention opened up with a panel featuring Cubs President Theo Epstein and general manager Jed Hoyer titled, "Business Operations." It was hosted by Cubs TV play-by-play announcer Len Kasper.
My friend and roommate for the weekend, Crawly, is a well-known figure at Cubs Convention, and he was in line early to get a front row seat. He saved an extra spot for me, so I was able to take some video of a couple topics that were discussed.
Crawly himself asked the first question and prefaced it with transparency by the Cubs organization and how he felt it has waned over the years. He then posed the question about a hot topic around baseball: minor league player salaries.
Another question was asked about how the Cubs brass handles the managerial hiring process. Theo and Jed have been involved in three hires with the Chicago Cubs: Rick Renteria, Joe Maddon and this past offseason with David Ross.
It was a very insightful discussion by Epstein and Hoyer and I am glad I sat in for this panel. Crawly live streamed the entire panel, which can be viewed here.
